Glen Vilhauer has announced his intention to seek re-election to the South Dakota State Senate in 2026.
Vilhauer currently serves in that role, representing District 5. The district includes Watertown’s city limits and the four surrounding townships. First elected in 2024, Vilhauer is a member of the Joint Appropriations Committee.
“With the experience I am gaining in Pierre, I can continue to be a strong, effective advocate for District 5,” says Vilhauer.
In a release, Vilhauer cited several legislative priorities:
- Fighting for public education and the state’s technical colleges, including Watertown’s Lake Area Technical College.
- Supporting our military and state and national defenses as it relates to the South Dakota National Guard.
- Working to keep state oversight out of city, county, and school decision-making.
- Striving to enhance economic opportunities in rural communities across the state.
Villhauer, a 10-year veteran of the South Dakota Army National Guard, served for eight years on the Watertown City Council. He was Watertown’s first deputy mayor. Additionally, Vilhauer served for nine years on the Prairie Lakes Healthcare System Board of Directors and four years on the South Dakota Retirement System Board of Trustees.
Vilhauer, a certified public accountant, and his wife, Darla, have four children and six grandchildren.
“It’s been an honor to represent the citizens of this district, and I look forward to continuing that commitment,” Villhauer said.
Early voting begins on April 17, with the Primary Election scheduled for June 2.
