NOTICE OF DEADLINE FOR FILING NOMINATING PETITIONS FOR THE PRIMARY ELECTION AND FOR FILING INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE PETITIONS
The deadline for filing nominating petitions for the primary election is March 31st, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed, by registered mail, by March 31st, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed.
The deadline for filing nomination petitions to run as an Independent candidate in the General Election is April 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by April 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed. For the offices of Codington County: Commissioners Districts I, III and V, Auditor, Register of Deeds, and Sheriff, nominating petitions must be filed in the office of the Codington County Auditor, 14 1st Ave SE, Watertown, SD. The nominating petitions for the offices of United States Senator, United States Representative, Governor, State Senate – Districts 4 & 5, State Representative – District 4 & 5, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, and Public Utilities Commissioner, must be filed in the office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501.
Nominating petitions for the offices of Codington County Commissioners – Districts I, III & V, County Auditor, County Register of Deeds, County Sheriff, Delegates to the Republican State Convention, and Republican Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman, shall be filed in the office of the Codington County Auditor, 14 1st Ave SE, Watertown, SD, during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Nominating petitions for the offices of Unites States Senator, United States Representative, Governor, State Senate – Districts 4 & 5, State Representative – Districts 4 & 5, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Public Utilities Commissioner, and East Dakota Water Development District Director-Area 1, must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. central time.
