
Doris Nelson, 94, Watertown
Doris Nelson, age 94, of Watertown, formerly of Henry, died Friday, September 6, 2024.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at Furness Funeral Home of Clark from 2:00-4:00 PM and one hour prior to the funeral services. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Furness Funeral Home with Pastor Derek Runge officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Valley Lutheran Cemetery of rural Dawson, MN. Pall bearers are: Corey & John Nelson, Nat & Chris Johnson, Kyle & Ben Nelson, Trista Virtue and Leon VanDerostyne.
Doris Lorraine Anderson was born July 18, 1930 in Madison, Minnesota to Melvin and Leona(Weber) Anderson.
She graduated High School in Marietta, Minnesota and then went to Mankato Cosmetology School. She also worked at the Monti Bakery in Montevideo, Minnesota.
She then moved to St. Paul, and worked for the 3M Company for two years putting scotch tape rolls in the outer casing.
She married Verden L. Nelson on September 3, 1950 in Marietta, Minnesota. They lived in Minneapolis from 1957-1963 and purchased their farm outside of Henry, SD in 1962.
After her children were born, she went to work at Memorial Hospital in Watertown doing housekeeping. She also worked for JH Larson’s in Watertown for thirty years in housekeeping, and at Ramkota Inn earning Employee of the Month in 1990.
Doris also worked at Country Inn & Suites receiving the Outstanding Hospitality Award from Aug thru November 2008, January, March, April 2009, and in January 2010 and January 2011. She also cleaned a chiropractor’s office and when that wasn’t enough, she volunteered her time at The Salvation Army.
Doris helped with farm work, having a garden which kept her busy with canning, freezing and feeding many mouths. She finally retired around 2012.
Doris was the Puzzle Queen, an avid reader, loved to travel and win money at the casinos.
She loved her family deeply, and loved to hear what the children and grandchildren were doing. She spent the winters (2011-2022) in Nevada, because she hated the cold, but when spring came she wanted to get back to her farm. Doris moved into Watertown in December of 2022.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Verden, son Michael and daughter Ruth, her brothers, Marvin, Leslie, Donald and David, sisters, Lois and Janice and daughter in law, Diane Nelson.
She is survived by her children: daughter in law, Lola Nelson of Watertown,SD, Tim of Hastings, Mn, Dan (Kim) of Clark, SD, Jane (Greg) Johnson of Sparks, NV and Jeff (Mary) Nelson of Garretson and Clark, SD, many grandchildren and several great grandchildren and her brothers, Robert and John and sisters, LaVonne Helkenn, Donna Runge and Linda Butler.
