Highway Patrol conducting sobriety checkpoints during October

Codington among 14 counties where law enforcement officers will be stationed.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety checkpoints in Codington County and 13 other counties throughout October. The checkpoints aim to reduce the number of impaired driving incidents on South Dakota roads.

In addition to Codington County, checkpoints will be held in Beadle, Bennett, Brookings, Clay, Custer, Fall River, Jerauld, Lawrence, Marshall, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, and Walworth counties. The checkpoints are funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and are conducted in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.

Authorities said impaired driving is a severe offense that can have devastating consequences. They urge drivers to make responsible choices and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you have been drinking, you should designate a sober driver or utilize alternative methods of transportation.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Office of Highway Safety are both part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
