The Florence School District is hosting its annual homecoming this week, which started with a pep rally, royalty coronation, and a powderpuff game followed by the traditional “Burning of the F” on Monday evening.
From the senior class of 23 students, Carson Vavruska, 17, of Florence, was nominated as king and Brooke Hlavacek, 17, of Florence, was in turn nominated to be the homecoming queen.
After the coronation Hlavacek said that she was firstly taken aback when she was nominated, but being crowned completely surprised her. Vavruska, on the other hand, said, “Really, I wasn’t even surprised that I won. I knew the electorate and had high hopes they would turn out for me.”
Following a lip sync presentation by grades 6-12, the school turned out to the powderpuff game featuring ladies from 9-12th grade on two teams playing two 20-minute halves.
The game, which ended in an intense tiebreaker, saw the “blue” team coming out ahead in overtime.
Following the game was the traditional “burning of the F”, monitored by firefighters, which turned into a picture perfect memory for seniors and youngsters alike.
Looking ahead, Florence will host a homecoming parade Friday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. followed by a football game in Henry Friday night against De Smet. The week is capped off with a family-friendly corn maze outside of the Florence CTE building Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the corn maze is $5.
