Lions Club begins annual Christmas tree fundraiser

Cora and Colin Nordquist of Wilmot shop for a Christmas tree for the Lions Club in Runnings’ parking lot. Handling the sale is Lions Club member Gary Steen.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around Watertown, and the Runnings parking lot on U.S. Highway 212 is no exception.

Members of the Watertown Lions Club spent Saturday morning setting up their Christmas tree sale area. Even before the main shipment of trees arrived from Northern Minnesota, customers were dropping by to check out this year’s selection.

Colin and Cora Nordquist of Wilmot were looking for a tree with softer needles, and preferably one that was cat-proof.

“We like coming to the Lions Club to buy our tree,” Cora Nordquist said. “We got ours here last year and they were great. They cut the bottom off for us and wrapped it up really good. Plus, it’s for a good cause.”

Gary Steen of the Lions Club said the annual Christmas tree sale is one of the organization’s top fundraisers. He had a few trees on hand that the club purchased from a Milbank-area tree farm, but the big shipment of trees from Northern Minnesota was expected to arrive soon.

He said the Lions ordered about 450 trees this year.

“You have to order them way back in August, or you won’t get any,” he said.
