On Thursday, Oct. 17 at about 6:55 PM, the Watertown Police Department responded to multiple reports of shoplifting incidents at Running’s and Tractor Supply. The suspects, a male and female, fled the scene in a black Ford Fusion with North Dakota plates, which was later confirmed to be stolen from Fargo, North Dakota.
After responding, a South Dakota Highway Patrol officer located the vehicle as it turned south onto Interstate 29. After the vehicle came to a stop, the male driver jumped from the car and fled on foot—the female driver remained in the car.
The driver evaded law enforcement for about 90 minutes before being found in St. Mary’s Cemetery by a Codington County Sheriff’s Deputy. The male suspect attempted to elude the law by climbing onto the roof of a building, but ended up getting stuck up there instead. Watertown Fire Rescue was called to assist in bringing him down. The male was cooperative and was taken into custody by the Watertown Police Department.
The driver was identified as 36-year-old Kyle Covington from Colorado. The female passenger was identified as 46-year-old Tammy Dunfee, also from Colorado. Covington faces charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Dunfee is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both suspects are currently being held at the Codington County Detention Center.
The Watertown Police Department continues to investigate the incident and expressed gratitude to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Codington County Sheriff’s Office, and Watertown Fire Rescue for their assistance.
