The Watertown Police Department's second annual Pet Costume Contest is going on now.

The Watertown Police Department isn’t going to the dogs, but the dogs are sure going to the WPD.

Cats, too.

The police are in the midst of their annual Pet Costume Contest, when people can dress up their pets and have their photo taken at the WPD. Prizes are given for the top three dogs and top three cats, with the winners determined by “likes” on the Watertown Police Department Facebook page.

Capt. Steve Rehorst told the Watertown Current that the contest is part of the department’s efforts to reach out to and give back to the community.

“It’s another way we can connect with the community,” he said. “People and get to know police officers in a personal way.”

And, he said, it’s a lot of fun.

Last year, more than 50 pets were photographed. Local businesses donate the prizes, and everybody has a good time.

The contest began on Monday, Oct. 14, and runs through Friday, Oct. 18. Pet owners can bring their furry friends, dressed in their best Halloween costumes, of course, to the Watertown Police Department at 128 N. Maple for a fun photo and a chance to win some “pawsome” prizes.
