A stash of fake money and real drugs have landed a Sioux Falls man in the Codington County Detention Center.

Scott Robertson

The Watertown Police Department responded to a gas station on Wednesday, Jan. 8, for a report that a male had attempted to pass a counterfeit $50 bill. The investigating officer confirmed that the $50 bill was, indeed, counterfeit.

During the subsequent investigation, the suspect who passed the counterfeit money was determined to be 54-year-old Scott Robertson from Sioux Falls. Additionally, it was determined that Robertson was staying at a motel in Watertown.

Two days later, on Friday, January 10, Robertson was located at the motel and was placed under arrest. A search warrant was granted for Robertson’s motel room and vehicle in the parking lot. During the search, more counterfeit bills were located along with two printers, color printer ink, fine watermarked printing paper, a paper trimmer, counterfeit license plate validation stickers, methamphetamine, digital scales, and drug paraphernalia.

Robertson was charged with forgery, possessing a forged instrument, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, maintaining a place where drugs are kept, possession of drug paraphernalia, and substitute license plates.

Robertson is currently held at the Codington County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash-only bond.

The Watertown Police Department would like to remind the public to carefully inspect cash before accepting it and to report any suspected counterfeit money to law enforcement.
