Small business basics with the Chamber

The Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the SDSU Extension to host a series of classes geared towards up and coming businesses.

New businesses take note: the Watertown Chamber of Commerce is hosting a series of classes geared towards new businesses put on by the SDSU Extension Community Vitality team.

The six week program covers an extensive list of topics including writing or updating business plans, tax and licensing, employee relations, pricing and marketing, customer service, social media, and aspects of financing. Each week will also feature different entrepreneurs who will share real world examples of each week’s topic.

A common outcome from the program is that business owners make time to work on business planning or new ideas for their business that they otherwise may not make time to address. Another benefit from the course tends to be community building as business owners are not only together learning, but are there networking with each other, which builds relationships within the community for the future.

The course starts on Oct. 7; the fee is $50 for chamber members and $70 for non-members.

“People always talk about how small businesses are the backbone of our economy, so this is one of the ways we are helping small businesses thrive in Watertown,” said Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tim Sheehan. “The fact is that all the businesses that complete this program will grow up as a business together. They will make contacts, sources, and maybe even friends, and will turn to each other for support as they grow.”

“This is the first time we are offering this class with the help of SDSU. If it becomes popular, we hope to offer more in the future.”
