Waverly Steakhouse to close

Eatery's last day is Saturday, Jan. 11

Saturday, Jan 11, will be the last day of operations for Waverly Steakhouse.

That message was posted on the establishment’s Facebook page on Monday night. The message stated in part, “We cannot continue operations as hoped.” The message thanked patrons and the community of Waverly for their support.

Eric Miller of EJMHospitality, which owns the business, told the Watertown Current several factors played into the decision to close, but the most pressing was business traffic. He said the steakhouse experienced a slump in business last summer, which is normal. However, it did not bounce back in the fall and has remained slow. Staffing was another issue. Although Miller commended his “great staff.” he said it was difficult to find people in Waverly or who are willing to commute from Watertown.

The building, on the west side of First Avenue in Waverly, is owned by area businessman Tyson Zemlicka. Zemlicka told the Current he is about 80% sure he will be listing and selling the building, but he would like to see it remain a steakhouse. He said: “If anyone has questions about purchasing the steakhouse, they can call or text me at 605-881-0431.”

Likewise, EJM will be selling off its equipment. Interested parties should contact Miller directly at ChefEJM@yahoo.com. The public is encouraged to use any gift certificates before Saturday, or after that time to contact Miller.

Miller said he plans on staying in the Watertown area and plans to continue EJMHospitality as a catering company.

Waverly Steakhouse first opened in 2005 under the ownership of Gary Kliegel. EJM has operated the steakhouse since October 2023 after it was closed for about 18 months.

Reflecting, Miller said, “We did great work for our guests.” Zemlicka echoed: “I just want to thank everyone that supported Eric and the steakhouse over the last year.”
