Ahead of South Shore’s 125th Anniversary, The Watertown Current is pleased to publish a special section on the community’s history.
For over 125 years, our small town has existed, nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of northeastern South Dakota on the southern shore of Punished Woman’s Lake. Over these many years, our town has experienced a great variety of highs and lows in its history … and thrived!
South Shore has thrived mainly because of its status as an agricultural center for a great many area farms. This has helped to support a large number of various businesses over the last 125-plus years. Today, we still boast a wonderful elevator business and three bars/taverns plus various other small, independent businesses!
The residents of South Shore — and the surrounding area — take great pride in our “small town” identity and our community. The camaraderie and togetherness of this “small town” have been very evident in the various gatherings and fundraising events that have been held here over these many years, as well as our efforts each year to spruce up our “little town!” There is also overwhelming support and pride for our local volunteer fire department. The men and women who have and continue to give their time to support our surrounding area with their skills and training are second to none!
While many appreciate the quiet “small town” qualities that South Shore offers to its residents and guests, our town still has the ability to “turn it up” for our many local events. For instance, our Fourth of July Fireworks display has drawn a great number of admirers over the years. Once again, this event is fully put together by local volunteers and donations.
This year, we hope that, once again, we will be able to show our pride and togetherness as we celebrate 125 years of incorporation as the town of South Shore. Come visit this beautiful “small town” and see for yourself! You will find out just why we like to say, “Welcome to South Shore!”
